Protecting smiles and supporting Aboriginal young people
The District’s Oral Health Service and Aboriginal Health Directorate (AHD) recently partnered on an initiative to support Aboriginal young people.
The AHD are always looking for meaningful ways to support grassroots initiatives that uplift and empower communities. One such initiative making a real impact is the 17x16 CDP Group, a youth-led movement based in the Waterloo/Redfern area.
What began as casual training sessions, has evolved into a positive, safe space where young people come together several nights a week to build fitness, friendships, and resilience. Their commitment to self-improvement and Community has inspired many.
To support the group for an upcoming boxing program, the Oral Health Service was called on to create custom mouthguards using the state-of-the-art Ministar machine at the Kogarah Community Dental Clinic.
The boys appreciated the care and support, and staff were equally inspired by the group’s energy and goals.
Akira Baigent, Oral Health Therapist, said it was an honour to work with the boys and to be part of the impactful initiative.
“It was an amazing collaboration working with the 17x16 CDP group, taking impressions and creating their mouthguards. The energy was so positive, and everyone was genuinely excited about getting their mouthguards,” said Akira.
“It was wonderful to see the boys having fun, supporting one another, whilst prioritising their oral health. I felt truly inspired by their dedication to connecting and empowering their Community. I’m grateful to have been part of this experience, and I hope everyone loves their new mouthguards!”
This partnership not only promoted oral safety but also strengthened relationships with the young Aboriginal Community.
